Michael Galante's award-winning embroidery "Dignity and Perseverance" is as much about capturing the beauty of a peacock as it is about his own struggles to overcome his disabilities. "Dignity and Perseverance" won first place in the 2006 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival needlework category and earned Galante a trip to Rapid City, S.D., earlier this month to meet with 130 other veterans who won top honors in nearly 160 categories.

Hundreds more will follow behind pushing strollers, walking dogs, and generally ambling along a mile-long path which will culminate in a face-painting, bounce house-jumping, post-race party to celebrate the morning.

The building might be new construction, but KHS principal Dr. Steve Robertson worked closely with the architects, VLK Architects, to ensure the Katy community and school alumni would recognize the building as its own. “We made a conscientious effort to capture the history of Katy High School and bring it forward in this building,” Robertson said.

I’ve been on a frugal, money-saving mission for about six weeks now. I’m no veteran of coupon clipping by any means. I like to consider myself (and this column) a work in progress where I take note of what works and what doesn’t work for folks trying to stretch their dollars right here in Katy. I’ve had a few successes with coupons, but more often than not, I end up buying things I don’t normally purchase and I have yet to score the 100 body washes for $1.50.
